ATB TOUR OF ALBERTA ANNOUNCES PUBLIC RIDES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FEBRUARY 23, 2017

ATB TOUR OF ALBERTA ANNOUNCES RETURN OF VELOTHON EDMONTON PRESENTED BY UNITED CYCLE AND ATB FAMILY RIDE SUPPORTING CASA

(Edmonton, AB) – Mass participation road cycling events, Velothon Edmonton presented by United Cycle and ATB Family Ride supporting CASA, will return to the streets of Edmonton on the final day of the ATB Tour of Alberta on September 4, 2017.

The UCI Velothon Majors, which aims to create premier urban cycling events in major cities around the globe enabling fans of the sport to have a true “feel-like-a-pro” experience, will be returning to Edmonton as North America’s only stop on the international circuit. On September 4, participants can anticipate the same high-caliber experience at the Velothon Edmonton presented by United Cycle, including closed roads on a similar course the professionals will ride later that day, feed stations and full support. Velothon Edmonton presented by United Cycle participants will again have the option to ride a shorter route of 60 kilometres or a longer 100 kilometre version of the course.

Additionally, families and youth will again be able to participate in the 5th annual ATB Family Ride, allowing public to ride and raise funds for CASA in support of child, adolescent and family mental health in a light-hearted environment.  ATB Family Ride participants will have the opportunity to ride a loop in the heart of downtown Edmonton at the same location as the start and finish of the ATB Tour of Alberta professional cycling race.

“We are so proud to again host the 5th annual ATB Family Ride supporting CASA, and we are thrilled to bring back the Velothon Edmonton for the second time,” said CEO Duane Vienneau. “Canada’s first-ever UCI Velothon event in 2016 was a huge success. The sport of cycling only continues to grow in popularity, and it’s no surprise to us that the demand for this public ride is so great here in North America. We welcomed participants from all across Alberta, and also from BC, Ontario, USA and even as far away as the UK and Australia. We are looking forward to filling the streets of our province’s capital city with some of the most enthusiastic amateur athletes from across the world to ride in this ‘feel like a pro’ experience.”

Other Velothon Majors events being hosted in “cycle iconic cities worldwide”, as described by the UCI, include Wales (UK), Berlin (GER), Hamburg (GER), Stockholm (SWE) and Sunshine Coast (AUS).
